Hispanic Flamenco Ballet
Latin American Sound & Dance (K-12) 9:50 AM to 11:00 AM
In a virtual age when many of us are turning to LCD screens in search of who we are, the LIVE and in-color cross-section of traditional music, dance and costumes from Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic – among other countries located in the Caribbean and Central and South America – directly connects students to the Hispanic world of the Americas.
From Argentinian tango, boledoras and malambo…, students can learn the history, politics, music and psychology of the cultures they are studying through each country’s respective dance traditions. It is a multicultural experience that ends with a final interactive workshop for students with our professional dancers.
Viva España. ! (6th-12th grade) 11:15 AM to 12:20 PM
Middle and high school students will enjoy an intense and passionate show in three parts: A potpourri of colorful Zarzuelas, a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung operatic scenes.
The second part will showcase the tradition of La Tuna, a group of troubadours who traveled around Spain playing mandolins, tambourines and accordions during the 13th century when the first universities were being established. Today, there is a Tuna in every Spanish university, identifiable by their black capes adorned by painted or embroidered ribbons, and “becas,” colored bands representing the students’ professions. Yellow stands for the medical school, and red for law schools. Part three comprises Tablao Flamenco, a mix of bolerias, solea, jaleo, sevillanas and rumba. A solo classical guitarist will play during two intermissions, and the audience will be invited to participate with the artists to dance the Macarena, a flamenco-rumba-pop-fusion song inspired by a neighborhood in Seville, Spain.
